Chapter Eleven

John Ringo kicked aside the filth on the floor inside the ranch house, seated himself in front of the fire and warmed his hands as the group of bedraggled men surrounded him. Outside, the Arizona sky was turning a vivid pink as the sun finally disappeared below the San Pedro hills. Ike Clanton busied himself around the room as he tried to ensure the gunslinger wanted for nothing. Ringo’s hard glare seemed to burn holes in the old man as he considered the situation as it had been explained to him on his arrival at the Clantons’ ranch.

Ringo raised his hand and stopped Ike in his tracks. The money, Ike. Get me my money.’

‘Now?’ The expression on the dirt-stained features seemed shocked as he squinted at the man in the chair. ‘You want the money now, Ringo?’

‘Right now, Ike.’ Ringo had anger painting his words as he spat them out. It didn’t matter to him how many of them there were in the ranch house, he knew that he could kill at least six of them before they got their guns out of their holsters.

Phineas Clanton edged towards young Billy who had not stopped eating since he had arrived with Ringo. ‘We always pays you after you done your work, Ringo. Not before.’

‘That was then, this is now.’ Ringo snapped his fingers and one of the ranch hands brought him a cup of hot black coffee which he accepted and started to drink. If you wanna go up against the Earp boys, I want paying in advance. Call it a whim, but I feel this might be one hell of a fight if it happens.’

‘Why do you want your pay before we hits town, son?’ Ike asked in his usual fashion, a style that bordered on trying to look and sound as poor as he wished everyone to believe he was. ‘What good is money before the fight?’

Ringo grabbed Ike’s arm and squeezed with a strength that frightened the old leader of the Clanton clan. ‘I ain’t asking for money, Ike; I’m just telling you that if I don’t get it now, I’ll be angrier with you boys than I ever been at them swine Earp boys.’

Ike could see something in the hard stare of Ringo that the others could not. He saw the fire that raged in the soul of the man who had never let him down in all their jobs together. If John Ringo had this much venom in his heart before they headed for town, it was a good sign. ‘Phineas?’

Ike’s brother moved towards them. ‘What?’

‘Get the chest,’ Ike said coldly. ‘I wanna pay Ringo his money before we heads to Tombstone.’

All the ranch-hands’ eyes were on Phineas as he nodded obediently and walked slowly into the next room.

Ringo started to smile and released his grip as he watched Phineas Clanton carry the heavy chest from out of a side room and drop it onto the table. A cloud of dust rose from the filthy wooden eating place as the elder Clanton walked towards it reluctantly.
